The education technology market is enormous, and most schools already use a Student Information System, a Learning Management System, and various point solutions for specific needs. The problem is not a lack of software. It is a lack of integration and a poor fit for institution-specific processes.

Consider the Individualized Education Program process. Federal law requires schools to develop, review, and update IEPs for students with disabilities. The IEP workflow involves classroom teachers, special education coordinators, school psychologists, parents, and sometimes external therapists. Most SIS platforms have an IEP module, but these modules are designed for compliance documentation, not workflow management. Budgeting and Funding Custom Software in Education

Title I and Title IV-A federal funds can be used for technology that supports student achievement. IDEA funds can support technology specifically for special education workflows. Many states have additional technology funding programs. Finally, plan for staff turnover. Schools experience significant staff turnover, and the institutional knowledge of how custom systems work can walk out the door with a departing technology coordinator. Clear documentation, intuitive design, and a relationship with the development partner that extends beyond initial delivery are all essential to long-term sustainability.
