Here is a direct breakdown of realistic timelines for custom software projects by complexity level, based on our experience delivering dozens of projects across industries, with the specific factors that accelerate or delay delivery.
Complexity Tiers: From Landing Pages to Enterprise Platforms
Software projects cluster into five rough complexity tiers. Each has a typical timeline range that holds across most technology stacks and team configurations.
Tier 1: Marketing sites and simple web applications (2-4 weeks). A brochure website, a landing page with a contact form, a simple content-managed site. This tier uses off-the-shelf frameworks (Next.js, Astro, WordPress) with minimal custom logic. The timeline is driven by design iteration and content preparation, not engineering complexity. These projects are rare and typically involve multiple teams, phased rollouts, and parallel operation of old and new systems during migration.

The Factors That Actually Move the Timeline
Within each tier, specific factors push the timeline toward the shorter or longer end. Understanding these lets you predict more accurately and optimize deliberately.
Factor 1: Design readiness. If you start development with finalized designs (wireframes, mockups, a design system), you save 2-4 weeks. The most productive approach to estimates is to define a fixed timeline and adjust scope to fit, rather than defining fixed scope and adjusting the timeline. “What can we build in 8 weeks?” is a more useful question than “How long will it take to build everything on this list?” The first question leads to prioritized delivery. How to Accelerate Without Sacrificing Quality
Certain practices consistently accelerate delivery without introducing the bugs and technical debt that come from cutting corners.
Ship in vertical slices, not horizontal layers. Instead of building the entire database layer, then the entire API layer, then the entire frontend, build one complete feature at a time: database, API, and frontend together. This produces working, testable software from the first week, creates feedback loops that catch problems early, and delivers value incrementally.
Use established frameworks and tools. A Rails, Django, Next.js, or Laravel application with a proven authentication library, a standard ORM, and a tested payment integration ships faster than a custom-built stack. Frameworks encode thousands of decisions that have already been made and tested by millions of users. Unless your project has requirements that no framework supports, use one.
Automate from day one. Set up CI/CD, automated testing, and preview deployments in the first week.
