Building a SaaS product is more accessible than ever, but the decisions you make in the first 90 days determine whether you ship a product that can scale or one that needs a costly rewrite six months later. The frameworks, hosting platforms, and third-party services available today let a small team go from zero to a production-ready SaaS application in 8 to 16 weeks, but only if you make the right architectural choices upfront.

This guide covers the full stack of decisions and trade-offs for building a SaaS product in 2024, written for founders and technical leaders starting from scratch.

Choosing Your Tech Stack

Your tech stack should optimize for three things in order: speed to market, hiring availability, and scalability. Premature optimization for scale kills more startups than technical debt ever does.

Frontend framework. Next.js (React) is the default choice for SaaS products in 2024, and for good reason. It handles server-side rendering for SEO-critical pages (marketing site, blog), client-side rendering for the application dashboard, and API routes for lightweight backend needs. The ecosystem of component libraries (shadcn/ui, Radix), state management tools, and developer tooling is unmatched. Alternatives: Remix if you prefer its data loading patterns, SvelteKit if your team is experienced with Svelte, Nuxt if you are a Vue shop. All are production-capable; the best choice is the one your team knows.

Backend and API layer. For most SaaS products, your Next.js API routes handle initial needs. When you outgrow that (typically at 50 to 100 concurrent users or when you need background job processing), extract to a dedicated backend. Node.js with Express or Fastify is the path of least resistance from a Next.js frontend. Python with FastAPI is excellent if your product has ML/AI components. Go or Rust are premature for 95% of early-stage SaaS products. Choose what your team ships fastest in.

Database. PostgreSQL. This is not a nuanced recommendation. Postgres handles relational data, JSON documents (via jsonb), full-text search, time-series data (via TimescaleDB extension), and vector embeddings (via pgvector). It eliminates the need for separate databases for different data types until you reach significant scale. Use Neon, Supabase, or AWS RDS for managed hosting. Start with a single instance. You can add read replicas later.

Authentication. Do not build auth from scratch. Use Clerk, Auth0, or Supabase Auth. Clerk has the best developer experience and most complete feature set for SaaS (organizations, roles, invitations). Auth0 is the enterprise standard with more granular configuration. Supabase Auth is free and good enough for MVPs. Whichever you choose, implement organization/team-level access from the start. Retrofitting multi-tenant auth is painful.

Payments. Stripe. Specifically, use Stripe Billing for subscriptions. Implement Stripe Checkout for the initial payment flow (it handles tax calculation, card validation, and 3D Secure in a hosted page), then use the Stripe Customer Portal for subscription management (upgrades, downgrades, cancellations, invoice history). This eliminates 80% of the billing code you would otherwise need to write. Budget 2 to 3 days for Stripe integration with webhooks.

Multi-Tenancy Architecture

Multi-tenancy is the architectural foundation of any SaaS product. Get it right early or face a painful migration.

Database-level tenancy. You have three options. Shared database with a tenant_id column on every table is the simplest and most common approach. It works well for up to thousands of tenants. Separate schemas per tenant (in Postgres, each tenant gets its own schema within the same database) offers better isolation without the operational overhead of separate databases. Separate databases per tenant provides the strongest isolation but is only justified for enterprise customers with strict data segregation requirements.

For 90% of SaaS startups, the shared database with tenant_id approach is correct. Enforce tenant isolation at the application layer with middleware that injects the tenant_id into every query. Use Postgres Row Level Security (RLS) as a defense-in-depth measure to prevent cross-tenant data leakage even if your application logic has a bug.

Application-level tenancy. Every API request must be scoped to a tenant. Extract the tenant context from the authenticated user’s session (the user belongs to an organization; the organization is the tenant). Never pass tenant_id as a URL parameter or request body field where it could be tampered with.

Tenant-aware data models. Design your database schema with tenancy from the start. Every business-logic table needs a tenant_id foreign key. Create a composite index on (tenant_id, id) for every table. This ensures that queries scoped to a tenant are efficient even as the total data volume grows across all tenants.

Building the Subscription and Billing System

Billing is where SaaS gets complicated. Pricing models affect architecture decisions.

Pricing model archetypes. Flat-rate pricing (one price, one feature set) is the simplest to implement. Tiered pricing (Good/Better/Best plans with different feature sets and limits) is the SaaS standard and requires feature flagging at the plan level. Usage-based pricing (pay per API call, per seat, per GB of storage) requires metering infrastructure. Hybrid pricing (base subscription plus usage overages) is increasingly common and combines the complexity of both.

Feature flagging by plan. Implement a feature entitlement system from the start. Create a plan_features table that maps plan IDs to feature keys and limits. Check entitlements at the API layer, not the UI layer (the UI can hide features, but the API must enforce access). A middleware that checks hasFeature(tenantId, ‘advanced_analytics’) before every restricted endpoint is cleaner and more secure than scattering permission checks throughout your codebase.

Usage metering. If you offer usage-based pricing, instrument usage events from day one. Write events to a fast append-only store (Redis Streams or a simple Postgres table with time-partitioning). Aggregate usage on a daily cron job. Report usage to Stripe using their Usage Records API, which handles proration and invoicing automatically. Do not attempt to build your own invoicing system for usage-based billing; the edge cases around proration, mid-cycle plan changes, and tax calculation are a full product in themselves.

Trial and onboarding flow. Offer a 14-day free trial with no credit card required. This is the current standard because it maximizes trial starts. Track activation metrics during the trial: which features does the user engage with? Set up automated emails at day 1, 3, 7, and 12 that highlight features the user has not tried yet. Convert trial users to paid by triggering a checkout flow when the trial expires or when they attempt to use a paid-only feature.

Infrastructure and Deployment

Choosing the right hosting and deployment setup saves money and headaches.

Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) for speed. Vercel for the Next.js frontend and API routes. Railway or Render for any dedicated backend services. Neon or Supabase for the database. This combination gets you to production with zero DevOps overhead. You can deploy with a git push, environments are created automatically per branch, and scaling is handled by the platform. Total infrastructure cost at launch: $0 to $50/month.

When to move to IaaS. PaaS pricing becomes expensive above approximately $500/month in platform costs. At that point, migrating to AWS, GCP, or Azure with containerized deployments (ECS, Cloud Run, or GKE) reduces costs by 40% to 60% but requires DevOps expertise. Most SaaS products do not hit this threshold until they have meaningful revenue, so this is a good problem to have.

Environment strategy. Set up three environments from the start: development (local), staging (deployed, mirrors production configuration with test data), and production. Use environment variables for all configuration. Never hardcode API keys, database URLs, or feature flags. Use a secrets manager (Vercel’s built-in env vars, Doppler, or AWS Secrets Manager) to manage configuration across environments.

CI/CD pipeline. Automate everything. Run linting, type checking, and tests on every pull request. Deploy to staging automatically on merge to main. Deploy to production via a manual approval step or an automatic promotion after staging passes health checks. Use GitHub Actions; the ecosystem and free tier are more than sufficient for early-stage SaaS.

Launching and Iterating Post-Launch

Shipping the first version is the beginning, not the end.

Analytics instrumentation. Instrument product analytics before launch, not after. Track user sign-ups, feature usage (which features, how often, what sequence), subscription events, and errors. Use PostHog (open-source, self-hostable) or Mixpanel. Define your activation metric (the action that correlates most strongly with retention) and measure it obsessively. For most SaaS products, the activation metric is something like “created their first [core object] within 48 hours of signing up.”

Error monitoring. Set up Sentry for application error tracking. Configure alerting so that new errors notify the team within 5 minutes. In the first month, aim for zero unhandled errors. Every error in a SaaS product is a user experiencing a broken feature, and early users have zero tolerance for bugs.

Feedback collection. Build a simple feedback mechanism into the product (a “?” icon that opens a feedback form, or integrate with Canny for feature request tracking). Review feedback weekly. In the first 90 days, personally respond to every piece of feedback. This builds relationships with early users who become your best advocates and most valuable source of product direction.

Performance monitoring. Track page load times, API response times, and database query performance. Set budgets: pages should load in under 2 seconds, API responses in under 500ms, and database queries in under 100ms. Use Vercel’s built-in analytics for frontend performance and a tool like Datadog or Grafana Cloud for backend monitoring.


Building a SaaS application in 2024 is a well-understood process with excellent tooling at every layer. The key is making deliberate choices early and resisting the urge to over-engineer before you have users. Ship fast, measure everything, and iterate based on real feedback.
