The disconnect runs deeper than missing features. It’s a fundamental mismatch in the work model.

Construction projects have hierarchical schedule structures (phases, activities, tasks) with complex dependency chains that generic tools can’t represent natively. A concrete pour depends on rebar inspection approval, which depends on rebar installation completion, which depends on form work, which depends on excavation, which depends on utility locate – and a two-day delay in the utility locate cascades through every downstream activity. Critical path method (CPM) scheduling, the mathematical approach that tracks these cascading dependencies, requires specialized scheduling logic that generic tools don’t implement.

Field conditions change the plan daily. Weather delays a roof installation by three days. A material shipment arrives damaged. A subcontractor no-shows. The superintendent needs to resequence work in real time while keeping the overall project on track. This requires schedule visualization that shows the cascade effect of changes, resource reallocation tools that respect labor availability and trade sequences, and communication channels that reach people who aren’t sitting at computers.

Drawing management is another gap. Construction runs on drawings – architectural plans, structural details, MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) layouts, shop drawings, and as-built documentation. These drawings get revised constantly, and using an outdated revision on a job site causes expensive rework. Time tracking in construction is complicated by the multi-employer job site model. Punch list management – tracking the hundreds of small items that need to be fixed before a project is complete – is a natural extension. Construction financial management is fundamentally different from product company finance. Revenue recognition follows the percentage-of-completion method, where revenue is recognized based on the ratio of costs incurred to total estimated costs. Construction accounting software (Sage 300 CRE, Foundation Software, Viewpoint Vista) handles this naturally, but many companies still track job costs in spreadsheets that are updated weekly rather than in real time.

Change order management is a perpetual pain point. Design changes, unforeseen conditions, and owner-requested additions generate change orders that modify the contract value and potentially the schedule. Design for large touch targets. Workers wearing gloves can’t tap a 16-pixel icon. Use buttons that are at least 48 pixels tall, generous spacing between interactive elements, and swipe gestures for common actions. Assume the screen is barely visible in bright sunlight by using high-contrast color schemes and avoiding subtle gray-on-white distinctions.

Offline capability is non-negotiable. New construction sites often lack reliable cellular coverage, especially during early phases before the building is enclosed. The application needs to function fully offline – capturing daily reports, time entries, photos, and inspection data – and sync automatically when connectivity returns. Conflict resolution (what happens when two people edit the same record offline) needs to be handled gracefully, ideally by treating each field-level change as an independent operation rather than overwriting entire records.

Photo handling deserves special attention. Construction documentation is heavily photo-dependent, and workers on a job site take dozens of photos daily. The app should make it easy to capture photos, automatically tag them with GPS coordinates and timestamps, associate them with the relevant project, task, or inspection item, and upload them in the background without blocking the user’s workflow. Compress images appropriately – a 12-megapixel photo from a modern phone is far more resolution than needed for documentation, and uploading full-resolution images over cellular data is slow and expensive.
