You shipped. The product is live, real users are signing up, and the adrenaline of launch day is fading into something more complicated: the realization that shipping was the easy part. What you do in the next 90 days determines whether your product finds traction or joins the graveyard of promising launches that nobody remembers.
Most founders and product teams make the same mistake after launch: they immediately start building the next batch of features. This feels productive but is almost always premature. The first 90 days should be dominated by listening, stabilizing, and learning — not building. Here is a week-by-week priority guide based on patterns we have observed across dozens of product launches.
Days 1-14: Stabilize and Instrument
The first two weeks are about making sure the product works reliably and that you can see what is happening inside it.
Triage production issues ruthlessly. Your first real users will find bugs your testing missed. Not edge cases — real, obvious bugs that somehow survived QA. This is normal. Assign one engineer (or yourself, if you are the team) to full-time production support for the first two weeks. Every bug report gets acknowledged within 4 hours and triaged into three buckets:
- P0: Users cannot complete the core action (sign up, make a purchase, submit a form). Fix immediately.
- P1: Users can complete the core action but with significant friction. Fix within 48 hours.
- P2: Cosmetic, minor, or affecting a small subset of users. Log for the next sprint.
Instrument everything. If you did not set up analytics before launch, do it now. At minimum, you need:
- Funnel tracking: How many visitors reach the landing page? How many start the signup flow? How many complete it? How many perform the core action within the first session? Each step-to-step conversion rate tells you where users are dropping off.
- Error tracking: Sentry, Bugsnag, or equivalent. Every unhandled exception in production should be logged with user context, stack trace, and browser/device information. Set up Slack alerts for new error types.
- Performance monitoring: Page load times, API response times, and database query times. If your average API response time exceeds 500ms, find out why. Slow products feel broken, and users do not give you the benefit of the doubt.
- Session recording (optional but valuable): Tools like PostHog, FullStory, or Hotjar let you watch real users interact with your product. Ten minutes of session recordings will teach you more about usability problems than ten hours of internal testing.
Set up uptime monitoring. Use Pingdom, UptimeRobot, or Better Uptime to check your critical endpoints every 60 seconds. Configure alerts via SMS and Slack. Your target is 99.9 percent uptime from day one — not because it is contractually required, but because early users are the most forgiving and the most vocal. One bad outage in week one and they will tell everyone.
Days 15-30: Listen to Actual Users
You now have two weeks of real usage data and (hopefully) a stable product. This phase is about understanding what users actually do versus what you assumed they would do.
Talk to users directly. Not through a survey form. Not through a feedback widget. Send a personal email to every user who has been active for at least a week and ask for a 20-minute call. You are looking for:
- What problem were they trying to solve when they found your product?
- What did they try before?
- What is the most confusing part of the product?
- What would make them recommend it to a colleague?
Aim for 10 to 15 conversations. The patterns will be unmistakable by conversation seven or eight. We have seen products pivot their entire positioning based on what they learned in these calls: a project management tool discovered its users valued it primarily as a client communication tool, not an internal planning tool.
Analyze the data. Your analytics from weeks one and two now have enough volume to be meaningful. Look for:
- Activation rate: What percentage of signups complete the action that correlates with long-term retention? For a SaaS product, this might be “created a project” or “invited a team member.” If your activation rate is below 40 percent, you have a critical onboarding problem.
- Feature usage distribution: Which features are actually used? It is common for 80 percent of usage to concentrate on 20 percent of features. The features you thought were important may not be the features users care about.
- Retention curve: Plot the percentage of users who return on day 1, day 3, day 7, and day 14 after signup. If the curve flattens (stops declining) by day 7, you have a retainable product. If it keeps declining, users are not finding enough value to come back.
Resist the urge to build. The biggest temptation during this phase is to start building features that users request. Do not. You do not yet have enough data to distinguish between a feature that one enthusiastic user wants and a feature that the market needs. Write down every request, tag it with the user’s context (industry, company size, use case), and wait.
Days 31-60: Fix the Onboarding
If you have done the first 30 days right, you now know your biggest problem. In our experience, it is almost always onboarding. The gap between a new user signing up and that user experiencing the product’s core value is where most products lose people.
Map the activation journey. Define the specific sequence of actions a user must take to reach the “aha moment” — the point where they understand and experience the product’s value. For Slack, it is sending a message in a channel and getting a reply. For Dropbox, it is putting a file in the folder on one device and seeing it appear on another. For your product, identify the equivalent.
Measure time-to-value. How long does it take a new user to reach the aha moment? If it is more than 10 minutes for a self-serve product or more than one session for a complex B2B tool, your onboarding needs work.
Eliminate unnecessary steps. Every field in the signup form, every configuration screen before the user reaches the core experience, every tutorial popup that interrupts the flow — each one is a potential dropout point. We have seen signup completion rates increase by 35 percent simply by deferring “company name” and “team size” fields to after the user has experienced the product.
Add progressive disclosure. Instead of showing all features at once, reveal them as the user needs them. A project management tool should show the task creation screen first, not the Gantt chart configuration panel. Complexity is fine; front-loading complexity is not.
Implement automated nudges. If a user signs up but does not complete the activation sequence within 24 hours, send a targeted email with a specific next step. Not “Check out our product!” but “You created a project but haven’t added your first task yet. Here’s how to do it in 30 seconds.” Nudge emails recover 10 to 20 percent of users who would otherwise churn.

Days 61-75: Identify Your Growth Channel
With a stable product, an improving onboarding experience, and 60 days of data, you can start thinking about growth. But not “growth” in the abstract — a specific, repeatable channel for acquiring new users.
The most common channels for early-stage products:
- Content/SEO: Write about the problems your users have. This works for B2B products with a consultative buying process. Timeline to results: 3-6 months.
- Direct outreach: Personally email or message 50 potential users per week. This works for high-value B2B products where each customer is worth $5,000+ annually. Timeline to results: 2-4 weeks.
- Community: Participate authentically in communities where your users congregate (industry forums, Slack groups, Reddit, LinkedIn). This works for niche products. Timeline to results: 1-3 months.
- Product-led growth: Build sharing, collaboration, or referral mechanics into the product itself. This works for products with network effects. Timeline to results: varies widely.
Pick one channel. Not two. Not three. One. Run a focused experiment for 30 days. Measure cost per acquired user and activation rate from that channel. If the economics work (acquisition cost is less than the lifetime value you project), double down. If not, try the next channel.
Days 76-90: Build the Retention Engine
Acquiring users is expensive. Retaining them is profitable. By day 76, you should shift focus from “how do we get more users” to “how do we keep the users we have.”
Identify at-risk users. Define leading indicators of churn. Common signals: login frequency dropping by 50 percent or more, key features unused for 14+ days, support tickets increasing. Build a simple churn risk score and review it weekly.
Implement lifecycle emails. Beyond the onboarding sequence, set up:
- Weekly usage summary (“You completed 12 tasks this week, up from 8 last week”)
- Feature discovery (“Did you know you can automate recurring tasks? Here’s how”)
- Win-back for inactive users (“We noticed you haven’t logged in for 10 days. Anything we can help with?”)
Close the feedback loop. When you fix a bug or add a feature that a user requested, email them personally. “You mentioned that exporting to CSV was slow. We just shipped a 3x improvement. Let us know how it works for you.” This is the highest-ROI customer communication you can send, because it demonstrates that you listen and act.
Establish a release cadence. Ship updates on a predictable schedule — weekly or biweekly. Announce them in-app and via email. A product that visibly improves every week builds confidence and loyalty. A product that is silent for months feels abandoned.
The 90-Day Retrospective
At the end of 90 days, conduct a structured review:
- What is our activation rate, and how has it changed? (Target: above 50 percent)
- What is our week-4 retention rate? (Target: above 20 percent for B2C, above 40 percent for B2B)
- What is our most effective acquisition channel, and what is the cost per activated user?
- What are the top three feature requests from retained users?
- What surprised us most about how users interact with the product?
The answers to these questions form the basis for your product roadmap for the next quarter. Not the roadmap you planned before launch — the roadmap informed by 90 days of reality.
