These are fascinating problems, and the people working on them deserve admiration. But the vast majority of economic value created by software has nothing to do with any of them. It comes from solving boring problems: getting invoices paid on time, scheduling the right number of warehouse workers for next Tuesday, making sure a plumber’s quote reaches the customer before the competitor’s does.

Boring problems are boring precisely because they are well-understood, widespread, and unglamorous. They do not attract venture capital pitches or conference keynotes. But they are the backbone of how businesses actually operate, and solving them well — reliably, efficiently, with genuine attention to the people who deal with them daily — creates enormous, durable value.

Why Boring Problems Persist

If boring problems are well-understood, why are they not already solved? Several forces conspire to keep them stubbornly present.

Off-the-shelf software is built for the average case. A general-purpose invoicing tool works for the 80% of businesses whose invoicing is straightforward. But the remaining 20% — the businesses with complex approval chains, multi-currency requirements, progress-billing against milestones, or regulatory-specific formatting — find that the general tool requires so many workarounds that it becomes a source of friction rather than efficiency. Before long, the “system” is the official tool plus a shadow system of informal processes that everyone knows but no one has documented.

Clear input-output boundaries. Tasks with clear boundaries are amenable to software because the software can own the entire transformation.

Measurable current cost. You can quantify how long the task currently takes, how many errors it produces, or what revenue it delays. Without a measurable baseline, you cannot calculate ROI, and without ROI, you cannot justify the investment.

Institutional dependency. If the process depends on one person’s expertise — “only Maria knows how to reconcile the Canadian accounts” — it is a risk. Encoding that expertise in software eliminates the single-point-of-failure and makes the organization more resilient.

Downstream impact. The task is upstream of something valuable. Scheduling determines labor cost. Invoicing determines cash flow. Quoting determines close rate. Tasks that sit at the beginning of a value chain have outsized impact because their outputs cascade through subsequent steps.

Solving boring problems well requires a specific engineering disposition. The work is not about architectural cleverness or technological novelty. It is about deep understanding of the domain, meticulous attention to edge cases, and relentless focus on the user experience of people who will use the software all day, every day.

Start by shadowing. Before writing a line of code, spend time with the people who currently perform the process. Watch them work. Ask why they do each step. Ask what goes wrong. Ask what they wish was different. The insights from two days of observation are worth more than two months of requirements documents.

Automate the happy path first. The 80% of cases that follow the standard process should be fully automated. The 20% of exceptions should be surfaced to a human with the relevant context pre-loaded. Do not try to automate every edge case in the first release — that is a recipe for scope creep and delayed delivery. A system that handles 80% of cases automatically and presents the other 20% in a well-organized exception queue is dramatically better than a manual process that handles 100% of cases identically.

Optimize for the daily user, not the quarterly reviewer. The warehouse scheduler uses the tool eight hours a day. The operations director checks the dashboard once a week. Build for the scheduler first. Keyboard shortcuts, bulk actions, sensible defaults, fast page loads — these are not polish; they are the core product for a daily user. The director’s dashboard matters too, but it is a reporting layer on top of a system that must first serve the people in the trenches.

Measure and iterate. Deploy the solution with instrumentation built in. Track the metrics that define success: processing time per task, error rate, throughput. Compare against the baseline you established before building. Share the results with the team that uses the tool. Celebrate the wins (they validate the investment) and investigate the gaps (they inform the next iteration).

The Business Case for Boring

When presenting the case for solving a boring problem, the framing matters. Executives are trained to evaluate technology investments against strategic initiatives — digital transformation, AI adoption, competitive differentiation. A proposal to “automate invoice processing” can sound small against those ambitions.

Reframe it in terms that connect to strategic outcomes. “We will reduce days sales outstanding by 15% by eliminating the manual bottleneck in invoice delivery” connects to cash flow, which connects to runway and investment capacity. “We will reduce scheduling errors by 80%, eliminating the overtime costs that currently run $200K per year” connects to margin improvement. “We will eliminate the dependency on two employees who are the only people who know the reconciliation process, reducing our operational risk” connects to organizational resilience.

The most compelling business cases for boring-problem solutions are not about the technology at all. They are about the business outcome — measured in dollars, hours, errors, or risk — that the technology enables. The technology is the means. The outcome is the point.
