Understanding WMS Feature Requirements by Operation Type

The first step is understanding which WMS capabilities your operation actually needs, because over-specifying leads to overspending and under-specifying leads to workarounds.

E-commerce fulfillment (D2C). High order volume, small order size (1 to 3 items per order), high SKU variability, and extreme speed requirements. Cloud-based commercial systems typically deliver 200 to 500ms, which adds 3 to 8 seconds per order when multiplied across multiple scans per pick.

Complex multi-system integration. If your WMS needs real-time bidirectional integration with a custom ERP, a proprietary order management system, custom material handling equipment (conveyors, sorters, AS/RS), and multiple e-commerce platforms simultaneously, the integration effort for a commercial WMS often exceeds the effort of building the core WMS itself. A custom system designed around your integration requirements from the start is often simpler to maintain.

3PL operations with unique billing models. Core data model.
